Let's be bad guys
As promised, thoughts on the Smallville season premiere:
Smallville: 8-1 Odyssey
Wow, they're really amping up the Clark/Lois already, aren't they? I am so excited to see him working at the Daily Planet, as well as the numerous hints about his future (double) identity; I'm really glad to see them starting to tie Smallville to the Superman mythos in a real way, since, well, it's been seven years and they aren't exactly kids any more, and also since this will almost certainly be the last season. I really, really hope the rumours about Erica Durance being in more than thirteen episodes are true - I loved her in this episode (competent, kickass!Lois with a gun *swoon*), and I can't wait to see more.
I can forgive the "Clark loses his powers (again)" storyline, if only because Tom Welling looked so very pretty all unshaven in the rain. Loved his friendship with Oliver. Loved the Martian Manhunter cameo. Did not love that the Martian Manhunter cameo ended with him sacrificing his powers for Clark's. I do hope we see him again, though.
Yay, Justice league! I would so have watched that show, and I really wish it had gone somewhere. Justice League + Lois is pretty much my favourite thing ever, and one day I will totally write that fic. I love the addition of Black Canary to the team, and I would have loved to see her be added to the cast as well as Oliver - if Clark/Lois/Oliver is my OT3 of awesomeness, Clark/Lois/Oliver/Dinah would be an OT4 of awesomeness squared. There is just no part of that that is bad. Sadly, it's not to be, but fingers crossed we get her as a guest star in more episodes, as well as any more JLA members who feel like dropping in.
I was sad that Sam Witwer wasn't actually in this episode, after getting so excited about his name in the main credits, but seriously, him being in there alone is exciting enough for me to go back and watch the credit sequence. (Okay, I'm a little ashamed to admit that I already did.) And I don't know who he's playing or anything else about his character, so if you do - please don't spoil me?
I'm still not a fan of Generic Evil HenchwomanTM - seriously, more deceptive than Lex Luthor? If you're trying to get me to like her, please don't do it by telling me how awesome she is. And, I guess they were trying to buy my love with the femslashy Lois scene? Which, don't get me wrong, I appreciated, but they could have done twice as much simply by toning down her eye makeup.
And, finally, Chloe. I'm still not watching the Chloe Sullivan Show many other people seem to be enjoying, but the less she pines over Clark, the more I like her. Not sure where they're going with the whole super IQ genius powers thing, or why her healing powers didn't work - it's possible that they just didn't work on Clark, but if they're trying to bait-and-switch her old powers for new ones, I am actually totally supportive of that. Because super computer powers actually make sense for her character, and the whole healing thing always seemed a bit tacked-on and random (like, I am totally on board with her being, um, meteor enhanced, but her specific powers seemed more like they were needed for a magical resurrection plot point than because they had actually been well thought out beyond that). Not to mention that healing powers - especially ones that could permanently kill you at any moment - seemed way too passive for Chloe, besides being a little useless (except where the writers needed a get out of death free card).
