Yes, I toally do that!! I have whole pieces of paper filled with names, and all my characters have these NPC relationships (that, sometimes, I can't help bringing into the game; one of my boyfriend's main characters started off as a throwaway mention in one of my character's posts, and he ended up creating and fleshing out the character).
That's freaking awesome. (Aside: Dang, I wish I could get my boyfriend into RP. That'd be wicked. We could RULE THE WOOOOOORLD--- *ahem* Right.)
I don't believe in throwaway characters, though. ^^ If given the chance, they can ALL be useful! Even the ones that I've failed to develop in the right way, I'll usually reuse facets of them and have them reincarnate somehow. Which is pretty awesome, I think. XD
I ALSO HAVE PAPERS FILLED WITH NAMES. My favorite site, which I've used ever since I started at HogMOO, is behindthename.com, because, I dunno. Nostalgia. And also, it has some neat categorizations, and a random name generator, which I also like to use when I'm in need of inspiration and the alphabetical listings aren't dong me any good. ^^

Haha! Actually, my boyfriend's my co-admin at both my sites, so I really couldn't do it without him. He makes an awesome "bad cop" to my "good cop."
And ... well, it's wasn't technically a throwaway character, since he was a pretty important NPC, but I guess I assumed that when we filled the position, someone would make a new character and explain the succession, rather than rolling with my idea; it was very awesome.
That's awesome! I loooove it when stuff like that can happen, rather than having to fabricate reasons for things. After all, life will happen and alter the paths of the RPG, which is what makes things interesting, but also can be insaaaanely frustrating. Ah, well, such is life, and we must take the good AND the bad. I'm glad to know that you could make something good about it. It's pretty awesome. ^^

I totally sympathise. For some reason, all my best/most insistent RP and character creation urges come late at night. But then, I'm a bit of a night owl.
Mine, too! That, and on spur of the moment things. I've had the best long-term RP things come up with on the spur of the moment, just because I or one of my friends took an idea into our heads and jokingly suggested it. Taking it out in game always proves to make for some amazing scenes. (I have a scene that I should share of one of my characters just going off at her ten-years-younger cousin, who is a bit of a cad and used to date another character of mine *head spins*... oh, it was beautiful. I'd have to set up the backstory of the scene a bit better, though.)
I forget what my point was. XD I'm not usually a night owl... I'm actually dead tired right now, but I know as soon as I leave to go to bed, I won't be able to sleep for nigh on an hour, which does suck. I totally need to get a booklight to help quell these tendencies.
Totally, some of my best ideas have come from chats with a friend (who used to run her own RP in the same fandom as my non-HP one); we'd be talking about our future plots and such, and I'd come up with all these ideas I never even knew I had until I wrote them down. Some of them are still being implemented; others I've lost, which really bugs me - I wish I'd saved the chat logs.
Urk, yeah! :( That'd totally bite. :\ Well, live and learn, right?
I think I now HAVE to join your game, just because, well, if we can geek out like this for how many comments now, obviously some good RP is in store. ^^
