Melissa's meme
From
bondgirl51, because my clever friends making quizzes that don't make my want to spork my eyes out is love.
1. What kind of underwear are you wearing right at this moment?
Black cotton briefs.
2. Which meal of the day is your favorite? Why?
Dinner. I rarely eat breakfast (I know, bad, but I'm never up early enough), and lunch is not something I generally make a big deal out of. A sandwich is not really that exciting. But dinner is fun, and includes wine, dates, friends ... definitely dinner.
3. Name the last 10 books you have read, and give a very brief opinion of them.
The Summer Tree, Guy Gavriel Kay. Kay is someone who I'd never read before, but had been meaning to for a while, and I wasn't disappointed. Speculative fantasy (five college students pulled into a fantasy world from our own) isn't something I thought I'd be into, but by the time I finished the first book, I was in love.
Carnival of Souls, Nancy Holder. Oh, god. Please don't laugh at me. Yes, it's a Buffy book, because I used to read them, and remember really enjoying at least one. Holder is good on plot, fine on the characterisation (as is to be expected), but the execution is less than perfect. Still think the premise would have made a neat episode, though.
Daughter of the Empire, Raymod E. Feist and Janny Wurts. Loved it. This was actually the first fantasy novel I ever read, when I was around seven or eight. I read Tolkien in primary/high school, but other than that, didn't start reading fantasy until Jeremy introduced me to the Wheel of Time. I had very fond memories of this book, and wasn't let down; after reading a bunch of good-to-mediocre fantasy, I could have fallen in love with it for the writing alone.
Everyone Worth Knowing, Lauren Weisberger. Yep, she of The Devil Wears Prada fame. I think I preferred the latter, but it's been a while since I read it. Pink, fluffy, and enjoyable.
The Bollywood Beauty, Shalini Akhil. I admit, I have something of a soft spot for Bollywood, so when I saw this Indian-Australian chick lit, I grabbed it. It was pretty much everything I was expecting, and a very good first novel.
The Amber Legacy, Tony Shillitoe. Australian fantasy in more than just name - it has kangaroos. Good, fairly standard fantasy fare, though slightly better than average. I do like Australian fantasy (or perhaps just Australian authors in general), though, so I'll be buying the rest.
Priestess of the White, Trudi Canavan. Ditto, mostly. I actually met Trudi recently at Conflux, and she reminded me a lot of one of my close friends. The writing is more grown up than in her first series, and it has some good ideas.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, J.K. Rowling. For somebody who read a lot of adult books as a child, I seem to read a lot of children's books now. I really can't say much about this without repeating what's been said a million times, or writing an essay. Also, considering I've just been reading
hbpspork, it's very difficult to review this without making fun. Still, I enjoy the series.
Ultimate X-Men. Okay, it's not a book, per se, but it's what I've been reading. Very good, but I still don't like Jean (I do like Cyclops, though).
Also not a book, but he has a book out. Tucker Max. The New York Times called him "highly entertaining and thoroughly reprehensible," and I couldn't say it any better. He's hilarious.
4. Name a celebrity that you would be delighted to meet and have a cup of coffee with.
Joss Whedon. The man is my god.
5. Describe a time in recent history when you felt afraid.
Whenever I think I'm being followed. It's happened maybe twice, but it's never fun. One time, it was when I was walking to uni, past some low-rent government housing, and there was a guy in a car idling along behind me. I pretending to make a phone call (at the time, my mobile didn't work, but he didn't know that), and he drove off.
6. Describe a recent "Aha! The lightbulb turned on!" moment.
Every time I have my period. I swear, I'm hopeless. I'll be (more than usually) bad tempered, or occasionally depressed, and really really confused about why. Then my period will start, and I'll be all, "Wow, of course!" You'd think I'd learn, after closing in on ten years.
7. If you could meet one person from your past again, and say anything to them, who would it be and what would you say?
Wow. Actually, I think it would be my high school boyfriend, and I would just say "hi." Things ended badly between us (my fault), and we were never friends afterward (his fault). I regret that, because we should have grown up more; and because he was once a very good friend, I'd like to mend that, if only a little.
8. How many pillows do you sleep with?
Usually, one, but in the last week, I started using two. It makes me feel like a kid again :)
9. Did you have a special stuffed animal as a child? What kind? What was it's name? Still have it?
I had two. One was a yellow rabbit, that really doesn't look like a rabbit at all, named Oscar. I used to carry him around everywhere by his ears, so much so that they fell out no less than three times, and had to be sewed back in. The result is that they're now at the back of his head, and he looks even less like a rabbit than he used to.
The second was a stuffed dog (a King Charles Cavalier). First it was a boy, named Rusty. After I saw Lady and the Tramp, it turned into a girl, and was named Lady. Finally, still a girl, it was named Billie, after my real dog. I still have both.
10. Imagine you have to get a tattoo (don't argue... you "have to" do it :P). What is it?
Erm, like another tattoo? The one I have now is a mermaid, on my back. If I were to get another, it would probably also be on my back, though I have considered getting a wolf on my ankle (and yes, I know it hurts).
11. Describe what you have on the walls of your bathroom.
Nothing, except a towel rack. At my dad's (aka: "Where I lived when I was a child," there's a music poster.
12. When is the last time you bought a new toothbrush?
Two or three months ago.
13. Right now, honestly, how clean or dirty is your kitchen?
Pretty dirty. I'm awful about leaving plates and cups on the bench.
14. What is your favorite article of clothing to wear?
Jeremy's White Sox jacket, ever since my first year in college (when I used to wear it over a singlet to class, or over nothing to dinner).
15. Describe the type of outfit you think flatters you.
Anything designed for hourglass shapes - I love 50's style clothing, but don't have enough of it.
16. Does your answer in 14 coincide at all with your description in 15? If it doesn't and you had to make a quick trip to the grocery store, which one are you more likely to be wearing?
Nope. And definitely the jacket.
17. If you've ever played "Truth or Dare" in real life, and were silly enough to pick "Dare", what is the one dare you got that almost convinced you (or did convince you) to only pick truth in the future?
Actually, I don't think I've even gotten one. I'm shameless, and everything is forgiven in college.
18. When you were a child, and you got in trouble, which parent's wrath did you fear more?
Probably mum's. Dad rarely got mad (but when he did, it was way scarier).
19. What is one of your favorite pieces of art (include a link if you have it)? Why?
You'd think this would be easier for an art history major. I'm going to have to settle for anything by Marc Chagall; that, or quite a few pieces in the NGA.
20. Provide a link to one of your most used internet sites.
Ignoring my own, because I'm not that shameless - Guild Wars Online, because I play that game way too much.
21. Provide a link to your current favorite internet-oddity (you know the type.... silly videos, odd comics, sites off the beaten path).
The oddest I can think of is probably Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.
22. What was the first email address you ever had?
ariel_buffy@hotmail.com. Still used for MSN messenger.
23. You get to play a video game for awhile.... do you chose an RPG or a first person shooter?
RPG, of course.
24. Name a movie that frightened you as a child.
Return to Oz. Those Wheelers were terrifying.
25. Name 3 careers, vastly different from your current one (or field of study/interest), in which you could have also been happy.
Pilot, Doctor, Actress
26. Name 5 of your favorite places in the world!
My dad's house. When I was a kid, I hated it, because it was so far away from my friends' houses, and there was no public transport to speak of. Around the time I got my driver's licence, I really started to appreciate it. We had 25 acres of bushland, and I loved to go out with my dog and write/draw/read. I'm actually really, really sad that he's going to be selling it.
College. Wonderful memories. And a very pretty campus besides, which is why I chose it.
France - Paris and Nice. One of the many places I visited with my dad after high school, and my favourite.
Madrid, Spain. Cheap beer and wonderful art museums - what more do you need?
Vanuatu. One of the three places short-listed for my honeymoon (because you have to think of the important things well in advance).
27. Tell me about your first kiss.
I was nine, and it was in one of those play areas at McDonalds. My sister was spying on us. Romantic stuff.
28. Name three of your strengths:
I'm creative, smart, and positive.
29. Name three areas in which you are challenged:
I get bored of things easily - I can't count the number of times I've started something, been very excited about it, and then just stopped.
I have a horrible temper.
I can lack motivation, or talk myself out of doing things I really should.
30. Do you prefer the bath or the shower?
Both. The shower for everyday; the bath to relax and pamper myself.
31. When do you normally wake up? When do you normally go to bed?
Honestly, it changes from day to day. Mostly, though, I get up around noon, and go to bed sometime in the early morning.
32. You have a chance to spend an evening with someone you care a great deal about, but may not be able to see very often. How do you prefer to spend that evening? What would you plan?
We'd probably go out to dinner (something fun, like teppanyaki), then drinking, then go home, drink more, and chat until dawn.
33. Do you ever do anything supersitious? If so, what?
I knock on wood, and throw salt over my shoulder. Not because I necessarily believe in it, but just ... because.
34. Pirates or Ninjas?
Pirates.
35. Jedi Knight or Savvy Smuggler?
I really couldn't handle the emotionlessness of the Jedi.
36. Healer (aka white mage/cleric) or Nuke (aka black mage/sorcerer)?
Nuke. Though I prefer the Ritualist/Shaman.
37. $500 falls into your lap. You cannot spend it on bills, food, or any other necessity. How do you use the money?
Clothes, hands down.
38. If you're a friend of mine, there is at least 1 thing in your life that makes you a geek. Name one of these things.
Just one? Probably roleplaying; I run more than one roleplay site, have done tabletop roleplaying, and love RPG video games.
39. What is your honest opinion about how you're doing in life compared to your age?
After talking to a few people older than me, I realise I'm doing fairly average. Just finished college, searching for a career, trying not to give into just "any job that's available." Honestly, though, I always expected to be doing better than average.
40. How many years separate your age from your mother's? Your father's?
I'm 29 years younger than my mum, 30 years younger than my dad.
41. What is something you'd like someone to notice in you, that is rarely noticed?
That I'm very approachable. It was always inconceivable to me that people would call me a snob for thinking I was better than them, when I was really just shy. I pretty much got over that, but I tend to think very well of people on little provocation, so I'll often be thinking of someone as a friend while they're still hesitant about talking to me.
42. Yes or no?
Yes. Absolutely, unconditionally, yes.
