Vid recs (for [personal profile] such_heights)

[livejournal.com profile] such_heights asked for Doctor Who and Torchwood recs. It turns out, I have a lot of these. This is part rec list, part playlist, and part guide to the Doctor Who universe in vid form. Spoilers for all aired episodes (up to Journey's End and Exit Wounds) under the cut.

Vid recs: Life, the universe, and everything (Doctor Who/Torchwood)

[This is the Doctor. Sometimes, he is very, very happy. Sometimes, he is very, very sad. And sometimes, he's just fucking scary.]

Moons Of Jupiter by [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice

This is possibly the most fun vid ever. Happy Doctor is good for the soul, and happy Doctor + kittens is adorable beyond words. Watch this now. Squee. Remember that feeling. You'll need it later.

New Dawn Fades by [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24

Because the Doctor isn't always happy - in fact, sometimes he's very, very angsty. But this vid is awesome. This is the other side of him, and makes up one-third of the triptych of (my) essential Tenth Doctor vids.

Handlebars by [livejournal.com profile] flummery

This? This is the other other side, the one we don't like to talk about too much. You know, the one where the Doctor has the power to destroy the world while barely lifting a finger, and he may just smile while he does it? And then go get chips? Yeah. This is that. It's also possibly my favourite Doctor Who vid ever.

[This is the Master. He is the Doctor's boyfriend/nemesis. He is evil, or maybe just severely misunderstood. He is also a lot of fun.]

Electioneering by [livejournal.com profile] humansrsuperior

There are a lot of great Simm!Master vids, which is even more impressive given the limited footage they have to work with. This is my favourite; slightly manic, just like the Master, it'll work its way into your head.

[These are the Doctor's companions. They are awesome.]

Scared Of Girls by [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl

Didn't think it was possibly to make a smutty, innuendo-filled Doctor Who vid using only canon footage? Boy, were you wrong. This is awesome, and contains nearly every (Doctor- or Master-centric) pairing in the known universe.

(Boulevard Of) Broken Songs by [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl

This is another of my very, very favourite vids - it's Martha and Rose and Donna, in all their awesomeness. According to the vidder this is vid is "if Rose, Martha, Donna, and the Doctor all went to a pub together, these are the stories they each would tell after a couple rounds of the good stuff." The use of the song here is amazing - one of the best uses of music I've ever seen in a vid.

[First was Rose. She traveled the world with the Doctor, and had lots of fun doing it. She also saw things that were not so fun. (The very first thing the Doctor took her to see was the destruction of the Earth. This should tell you a lot about their relationship.)]

And She Was by [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice

This is the Rose that most people fell in love with in season one - the one who is just discovering the universe, and the Doctor, and saving the world on the way. Amidst all the angst post-Doomsday (and post-Journey's End), this reminds me why I love her.

The Lonely People by [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro

One of [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro's unique strengths is vidding instrumental pieces; this is a fantastic example of that, a look at the not-so-fun things Rose has seen that's compelling to the end.

[Next - sort of - was Donna. She was also last, but for thematic purposes, her section goes here.]

Pretty Woman by [livejournal.com profile] humansrsuperior

In which Donna is awesome, and the Doctor knows it; in which they are so not married, except when they kind of are; and in which Donna gets a happy ending. For those disappointed with Donna's fate in Journey's End, this serves brilliantly as a fix-it vid, and is definitely happy-making.

[Finally, we have Martha. Martha is more awesome than you.]

Don't Touch That Dial by [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice

Martha's journey. Watch her save the world, and appreciate her in the way she deserves to be appreciated.

Shut Up And Drive by [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro

In which Martha is possibly even more awesome. Martha > you. That is all.

Don't Give Up by [livejournal.com profile] millylicious

Martha, in Last of the Time Lords. Perfectly showcases the strength of her character, and the brilliance and scope of what she achieved.

[Sometimes, the Doctor's companions aren't so happy. This is because he is often a complete prick.]

What We Had by [livejournal.com profile] cherryice

Martha, Jack, and Mickey, who the Doctor often gave the short end of the stick. Each left behind in their own way, overshadowed by the Doctor and Rose, and later, by the Doctor and the Master. Bitter, and in no way unjustifiably so, this vid shows you rather than just telling you why travelling with the Doctor is sometimes not all it's cracked up to be.

[But they do okay on their own, anyway. Like Jack.]

This Is Everything by [livejournal.com profile] sol_se

This is my favourite Jack vid - honest and evocative and painful at times. I gave you everything, and boy, was that a lot.

[Jack is the leader of Torchwood - maybe you've heard about it? They save the world. A lot. They also have lots of sex. Especially Jack. Jack has sex with everybody, but most often with Ianto. Sometimes, they have sex on-screen. This is because Torchwood is very different from Doctor Who.]

You're So Damn Hot by [livejournal.com profile] melina123

An awesome, fun Jack/Ianto, Jack/everyone vid. Because, well, he is.

Papa Don't Preach by [livejournal.com profile] greensilver and [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice

Has anyone out there not seen this yet? If so, run, don't walk. Don't let the premise put you off; it's perfect.

[Second in command of Torchwood is Gwen. Many people in fandom hate her. I love her.]

Nine Crimes by [livejournal.com profile] xandra_ptv

This is, to me, the perfect Jack/Gwen vid. If you're a shipper, it will shatter you (and then make you put yourself back together so you can watch it again); if you're not, it will probably leave you thinking, see, this is exactly why it's a bad idea. Either way, it's definitely worth watching.

The Test by [livejournal.com profile] sapote3

Tosh/Gwen! One thing I would really like from Torchwood is more femslash. Unfortunately, we never really got much Tosh/Gwen interaction on the show. Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] sapote3 uses parallels, intercuts and recontextualising in awesome ways here to provide a believable and satisfying femslash vid.

[That other girl up there? She's Tosh. Tosh is awesome, but often feels overlooked.]

Steady As She Goes by [livejournal.com profile] kuwdora

I really love this vid, which is a brilliant look at Tosh. I don't think I really realised how much I loved her until she was gone, but luckily, I still have fandom.

Floorplan by [livejournal.com profile] sol_se

The song choice here I think is inspired - it, and the vid, is so perfectly Tosh, complete with her insecurity and her need to be loved, to be recognised; her desire to connect with people, and her frequent inability to do so.

[Rounding out the team is Owen. Owen has Issues. He also died. This was not the end of his story.]

Cells by [livejournal.com profile] vaeltaa

This is the perfect Owen vid - his issues, his angst, his anger. And even with all that, it doesn't get bogged down; it keeps going, pushing through, just like Owen does, just like every member of Torchwood occasionally has to.

[But it's not all doom and gloom. Because, fundamentally? These people save the world. And they really, really love each other, even if it doesn't always seem that way.]

Smiley Faces by [livejournal.com profile] charmax

Action! Drama! Aliens! Smiling! I dare you not to get up and dance while watching this. I double dare you.

Groove Is In The Heart by [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss

And now, dancing! I love the way this vid transitions from Doctor Who to Torchwood and back, via Jack - well, I love a lot of things about this vid, but I love that especially.

History Repeating by [livejournal.com profile] rhoboat

There are some awesome parallels here - I could go through and list my favourite moments, but I'll let you discover them for yourself. Though I will say I really love all the bits with the sonic screwdriver, particularly the moment at 1:38. Adorable, and makes me laugh out loud every time.

Affirmation by [livejournal.com profile] butterfly

A feel-good vid if there ever was one. I really love some of the clip choices used, and I especially love the inclusion of Mickey/Jake, which makes me happy like a happy thing.

And a bonus vid:

Love Is All You Need by [livejournal.com profile] such_heights

For everyone who isn't [livejournal.com profile] such_heights, if you haven't seen this vid, why the hell not? Don't you have a soul? Don't you love love? This is pretty much guaranteed to put a smile on your face - mine starts when Jackie and Pete run up to embrace each other, and doesn't go away.

[See what I said about love?]

Yay, I'm glad I could point out some new stuff! Of your Torchwood vids, I think Floorplan is my favourite - it's just so very perfectly Tosh.
