Yuletide reveals post
Yuletide reveals are up! I'll be posting my fics here over the next week or so, but in the meantime: I wrote my main assignment, a pinch hit, and six treats, for The Mindy Project, Doom, Arrow, Batgirl (x2), Nightwing, The Non-Adventures of Wonderella, and Super Best Friends Forever.
If We Don't Make It We'll Fake It (6160 words) by amathela
Fandom: Mindy Project
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Danny Castellano/Mindy Lahiri
Characters: Mindy Lahiri, Danny Castellano, Jeremy Reed, Marc Shulman, Morgan Tookers, Betsy Putch
Summary: They can pretend to be friends. It can't possibly be that hard. Right?
This was my main assignment, and I was super excited to get it; I really, really felt like writing some Mindy Project fic for yuletide, and had already bookmarked the request for a potential treat, so it worked out perfectly. (Also, the recipient was my yuletide author last year, who wrote me BJ/Mindy, so that was a nice bit of symmetry.) The Mindy Project really lends itself to an abundance of rom-com tropes, which was reflected in a lot of the requests and fics written this year; I had a pretty sizeable shortlist of ones I was dying to write, but I decided to go with 'pretending to be friends', which I'd wanted to write ever since the episode where they lied about being BFF, and which I thought was a really fun twist on the pretend dating trope. And I think it went pretty well? I mean, it's basically 5000 words of banter followed by makeouts, so.
No Heroics (3887 words) by amathela
Fandom: Doom (2005)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: John Grimm/Samantha Grimm
Characters: John Grimm, Samantha Grimm
Summary: John and Sam try to cover up his new-found abilities. It goes about as well as you'd expect.
This was the pinch hit I wrote, sort of. (By which I mean, I saw it go up on the pinch hit list pretty early on and hastily bookmarked the letter for a potential treat; like my main assignment, the idea was something I'd wanted to write for a while, and I was super excited to see someone request it. As with all the treats I wrote, I kept my eye on the recipient's gifts page to make sure they had a main gift, but the pinch hit deadline came and went, and none ever appeared. So then I figured I'd grab it as a pinch hit when it went out again, except it didn't, which means either the original pinch hitter was given an extension, or a replacement pinch hitter was found privately; whatever the case, nothing was ever posted, but I had what I thought was a pretty decent fic written to their request, so when the 24th came around and they were still gift-less, I posted it, figuring it would make a decent pinch hit. Which it ended up being, and I have no idea what ended up happening to any of the assigned authors, but I'm happy I was able to give a gift for a prompt I loved.)
... And that's pretty much the longest parenthetical statement I've ever written, oops. Anyway, the request was for post-movie Doom fic, and having already written a slightly angstier fic along the same lines, I loved the idea of writing something slightly more fun and playful, but still with that threat of potential exposure hanging over their heads.
Are You On My Side (6033 words) by amathela
Fandom: Arrow (TV 2012)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Characters: Oliver Queen, Thea Queen
Summary: Thea discovers Ollie's secret. Sidekicking ensues.
This was the first treat I wrote, which I thought it was pretty obviously, because THEA IS SPEEDY OKAY. Also, I started writing it pretty early, so it ended up not meshing with canon pretty much at all past the first couple of episodes, but I tried not to care too much about that, because that's what you get for messing with ongoing canon. Anyway, this is pretty much everything I want from the show, so I just had to write it, and it ended up being the most popular of my fics this yuletide, so, yay!
Team Building 101; or, Titans Together! (2071 words) by amathela
Fandom: Batgirl (Comics), Red Hood and the Outlaws, DCU - Comicverse
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Stephanie Brown, Cassandra Cain, Donna Troy, Wally West, Mia Dearden, Connor Hawke, Koriand'r, Roy Harper, Jason Todd
Summary: Once a Titan, always a Titan. (Or, this is what some of the missing characters have been up to in the New 52. Hint: It isn't 'not existing.' Or at least, for everyone except Donna it isn't.)
The request for this one only asked for Steph and Cass, but once I got the idea for this, I couldn't not write it. Of all the problems I have with the New 52, the non-existence of some of my favourite characters is the biggest one; when one of the prompts asked for what Steph and Cass were up to in the reboot, I couldn't help expanding it a little to include some of the other sadly missing characters. Because yay, teams! And then I needed an actual plot to go with it (plot: the absolute bane of my existence this yuletide), and I really, really wanted to include Kory in the fix-it, because some things are worse than not existing. Also, I really wish there were a Titans team in the reboot, I miss the Titans. So I made my own!
The Thrill Can Kill (2663 words) by amathela
Fandom: Batgirl (Comics), DCU - Comicverse
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Stephanie Brown/Dick Grayson
Characters: Stephanie Brown, Dick Grayson
Summary: Steph's used to Batman suddenly appearing in her bedroom.
Dick/Steph, pairing of my heart! I couldn't not write this; even though
dudski's request asked for characters I didn't include, I kind of handwaved that for treat purposes (sorry!), since she also mentioned Dick/Steph in her letter, and that was pretty much all it took for me to want to write it. I had a really hard time coming up with a plot for this one, too (seriously, bane of my existence), but once I did, the rest was fairly easy to write.
I Must Belong Somewhere (1273 words) by amathela
Fandom: Nightwing (Comics), Teen Titans (Comics), DCU - Comicverse
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Dick Grayson/Rose Wilson
Characters: Dick Grayson, Rose Wilson
Summary: Dick visits Rose at Titans tower.
I was actually really sad at how little-read this was compared to, say, my Batgirl fic with half the same pairing. More people should love Rose Wilson! This was the second treat I wrote for
dudski, because she does love Rose and she posts the absolute best primers (warning: ~feelings!), and because I had just finished Teen Titans and the Renegade arc in Nightwing where Rose shows up, so obviously I had to write fic. ALL ROSE NEEDS IS PEOPLE WHO LOVE HER AND BELIEVE IN HER AND DON'T THINK SHE'S TERRIBLE, OKAY.
Spirral Out Of Control (1230 words) by amathela
Fandom: Non-Adventures of Wonderella
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Wonderella, Wonderita
Summary: Or, how Wonderella saved the city through sheer awesomeness and not being totally negligent, by Wonderella.
This was another prompt I saw go out on the pinch hit list and couldn't help writing, because Wonderella! It was also maybe the most fun thing I wrote, and an excellent excuse to read through the comic archives looking for plot ideas ;)
Supermans Assemble! (1056 words) by amathela
Fandom: Super Best Friends Forever (DC Nation Videos)
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Supergirl (Super Best Friends Forever), Batgirl (Super Best Friends Forever), Wonder Girl (Super Best Friends Forever)
Summary: Hanging out at the Fortress of Solitude. What could possibly go wrong?
I actually only (finally) watched Super Best Friends Forever the other day, and IT IS SO ADORABLE SERIOUSLY, but it's also only five roughly minute-long episodes, sad. I wrote this, along with the Wonderella fic, on Christmas Eve, and it was an excellent way to cap off a pretty great yuletide.
This was definitely my most productive yuletide, which I blame on having written almost nothing the entire rest of the year. Also, if 2009 was my Disney yuletide, 2012 was definitely my comics, yay! yuletide, which was fitting, given that's what took up a lot of my fannish attention last year.
Also,
ladymercury_10 totally guessed that I wrote The Thrill Can Kill, so, I owe you something fannish! Leave me a prompt/request and I'll try to make you something cool ;)
