Things I have read lately: Books!
The title of this post may be kind of obvious? But I figured I'd split this up, since there's a much much (much) longer comics section coming soon, so.
The Good
Soulless by Gail Carriger. Okay, so, I read and agree with a lot of the criticisms about this book, ESPECIALLY THE RANDOM POV SWITCHING ALL THE FREAKING TIME WHAT EVEN WAS THAT, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. BECAUSE MAKEOUTS, mostly. Those were some A++++ makeouts. I've been spoiled for later books, and am kind of cringing at the plot I know is coming up, but lbr, I'm totally going to read them anyway.
HDU by India Lee. SPEAKING OF A++++ MAKEOUTS. I actually expected to not like this very much? But then I did, and then I started picturing Amanda as Anna Kendrick, so obviously I fell completely in love with her. AND THE PAIRING WAS SO GREAT, I ONLY WISH HALF THE PLOT HAD BEEN REPLACED BY MORE MAKEOUTS. I HEARD THERE'S MAYBE GOING TO BE A SEQUEL, THOUGH? I WOULD BE TOTALLY INTO THAT.
The Meh
Shut Out by Kody Keplinger. I liked this slightly more by the end than I thought I would, if only for the frank and generally sex-positive conversations between the female characters, but otherwise, it was pretty average YA fare.
The Ugly
The Brush Off by Laura Bradley. Okay, so I can't exactly say I was enjoying this in general - it seemed like it might be exactly the kind of fluffy chick lit/crime hybrid I love* (hello, Jennifer Crusie and Janet Evanovich), but then it ended up being way too familiar, to the point of being an almost literal mashup of books I'd already read (is that actually you, Jennifer Crusie and Janet Evanovich?). Plus, the one possible significant variable - the female protagonist - didn't really appeal to me at all, so. But, whatever, I was pretty much going to keep reading anyway - until I got to the huge mess of transphobia in the middle, and practically threw it across the room. Characters who present as female and give female names (and all other vaguely genderqueer characters, for that matter) being called 'he/she,' insisting on using male pronouns even for characters who have physically transitioned, a massive obsession with genderqueer characters' genitalia ... yeah, it was pretty terrible. If I could have given it zero stars on goodreads, I would have.
*Which is odd, because I'm not actually all the into crime/mystery/procedurals in general, but most of the chick lit I really love is in this genre?
Currently Reading:
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, I HAVE BEEN READING THIS BOOK FOR LITERALLY MY ENTIRE LIFE, I THINK I WILL DIE READING THIS BOOK AND THEY WILL HAVE TO READ IT AT MY FUNERAL. I mean, I'm enjoying it? But lbr, this thing is looooong.
I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You. I'm not very far through it, but I'm enjoying it so far.
The Marriage Bargain. Haha, IDEK. I was in the mood for super trope-y chick lit, which this definitely is, though the characters are still a little too Stock Interchangeable Chick Lit Archetypes for my taste so far.
Up Next:
Tomorrow, When the War Began re-read for
beforetv
Re-reading Heist Society, then catching up on Uncommon Criminals. I'M TWO BOOKS BEHIND, I KNOW. SO TERRIBLE.
EVENTUALLY I WILL READ THE FINAL WHEEL OF TIME BOOK. Maybe. If I ever finish Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
