Veronica Mars FBI

Since I've been recently getting back into Veronica Mars fandom, and with news about the possible movie coming out, it seemed like as good a time as any to (re)watch the Veronica Mars FBI trailer. And ... I mean, on one hand, I'm glad they never made it. Because it's not Veronica Mars; it's a spin-off of Veronica Mars, only it happens to star the same person. And given the bulk of season three, I can't quite make myself believe it would have been really good. But on the other hand, it did have potential (and I'm an eternal optimist), and there were things I really liked about it.

For instance, I really liked Cally, and I liked the idea of Brady and Omar - 09ers for a new age, which I think the show (and Veronica) needs; she can't be all snarky and independent if there's no-one to be independent from. Seth was ... kind of Logan-esque, actually, at least in that he reminded me of Jake McDorman who reminds me of Logan. I think it would have been interesting to see his relationship with Veronica play out - maybe without reigniting their romance, but using it as background for their rivalry and working relationship. And I would have loved to see Cally and Veronica getting to be friends and working together. (After Veronica saves her from the bomber? That's a pretty good basis on which to forge a new friendship.)

Mostly, though, I loved Carter ♥. And Carter/Veronica. It really didn't occur to me until rewatching The Girl Next Door that Adam Kaufman had already been in Veronica Mars, but I'm more than okay with the reappearance. He had awesome chemistry with Veronica, and snarky partners yay! "Plus I heard you ask Hendricks why you were getting stuck with Barbie. You must have read my file, 'cause I don't tell anyone my middle name." "Your middle name is -" "You made it through the academy?" And this is pure bias talking, but he reminded me a little of a (much, much, much) smarter Lamb. Well, the Lamb in my head, anyway. Of course, I'd have given anything for more actual Lamb, but I'll take what I can get. And Carter? Definitely something I would have tuned in for.

And, god help me, I'm really trying to resist writing fic for it. Because ... it's based on ten minutes of a promo that never became anything, that gives us only the barest glimpse of new characters and relationships, and that has exactly zero potential audience. And yet.

If there's anyone who hasn't seen it, though, and wants to, here you go. It's worth a glimpse, I think, if only to see what might have been (for better or for worse). And, yes, I am glad they're not going the FBI route with the movie - there'd be too much backstory for non-fans, too much new information for fans, and in two hours with such a huge shift in the original premise, I really don't think there would have been much point to it. The appeal of making a movie out of a cancelled series, after all, is that it allows you to wrap up loose ends and play a little longer in the world, and Veronica Mars FBI: The Movie would have done neither. I am trying to convince myself to be cautiously optimistic about the actual movie they might make, though.
