I'm hoping I'll be able to do more recs once I've started reading madness fics, but for now, here are some of the fics I read and loved in the main ![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
yuletide collection. Fandoms include Frasier, Greek & Roman Mythology, The Guild, Hawaii Five-0, The Middleman, Parks & Recreation, Push, Rome, Sanctuary, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Sports Night, Stephanie Plum, Traveler, and Doctor Who/Merlin RPF.
Guns 'n' Neuroses (Frasier) Niles and Frasier, hunters of the supernatural.
I never would have read this fic if it hadn't been for recs, but I'm so glad I did - it's probably no surprise that Supernatural really does nothing for me, but (apparently) add in a funny and wildly counter-intuitive fusion and I'm there!
Here Thy Hands Let Fall the Gather'd Flower (Greek & Roman Mythology, Hades/Persephone) Persephone wanted to be one of Artemis’s maidens. Hades wanted to help her avoid Zeus’s unwanted attentions. Needless to say, things didn’t go according to plan.
I loved this fic, which is ... almost a romantic comedy (but more awesome). Full of plotting and scheming and misunderstandings and communication and making a choice, in the end.
Kindle Fire With Snow (The Guild, Fawkes/Codex) For someone who has experience playing with fire, Codex sure gets burned an awful lot. When her professional and gaming lives awkwardly intersect, why does Fawkes have to be right there?
I only recently got around to watching The Guild, so I was excited to find this fic; it captures the awkward and occasionally sweet dynamic between Fawkes and Codex really well, with some great cameos from the rest of the ensemble.
Lōkahi (Hawaii Five-0, Danny/Kono) Danny's life would be a lot less interesting if Chin stopped trying to solve so many things.
I've been craving Danny/Kono fic since that time they made out and it was AWESOME, and this is excellent - Danny and Kono pretending to be a couple when they go undercover(!), and then not so much pretending any more.
Five Times Wendy Flew Solo (The Middleman) The Middleman looks around at the various assailants, then back at Wendy. "You...want more solo missions?"
What is says on the tin - five times Wendy takes the lead during a case. Funny and awesome, and very true to the show.
The Yuletide Gift-fic Temporary Title (The Middleman) Set sometime after The Doomsday Armageddon Apocalypse, this is a story of transatlantic voyages, malevolent mummies, and sex pollen. In other words, it's just another ordinary day in the life of Wendy Watson.
Awesome case of the week type fic, where Wendy and the Middleman go to Cairo. (Cairo, Egypt; not Cairo, Illinois, or Cairo, Nebraska.)
Howling From The Vaults (Parks & Recreation, Ron/April) Ron and April rock five clichés.
So, I've had (mostly gen) ~feelings about Ron and April since that time she stole her dad's car and took him to the hospital, but - apparently I am perfectly capable of shipping them, too? Also, clichés. Are awesome.
it's just the laws that make us bad (Parks & Recreation, Ben/Leslie) He honestly thought the Freddy Spaghetti concert would be the last time he saw her.
I loved this, a lot - it absolutely nails the tone of the show, which is seriously impressive. Plus, Ben! Being widely hated! And digging Leslie, which, of course.
High Priestess (Push) The High Priestess card signifies intuition, wisdom, and secret knowledge. Something remains yet to be revealed, but patience is needed. Hidden influences affect your life, and intuitive insight is required for a solution. The High Priestess card can also signify Cassie Holmes. If it's drawn in bright neon markers.
Great slice of life fic, with Nick and Cassie being their awesome selves. I loved the use of Cassie's visions in this.
Gen Julia in aeternum (Rome, Antony/Atia) The day she met Mark Antony, Atia almost died.
Fantastic Atia fic. Atia was far and away my favourite character on Rome; I loved the relationship between her and Mark Antony, and they're both portrayed really wonderfully here.
The Adventure of the Subterranean Silkworm (Sanctuary, Will/Helen) In which Will Zimmerman investigates a minor mystery and Helen Magnus ends up with strange things in her hair.
Mostly gen, with hints of Will/Helen at the end. When Magnus and Kate leave to track down a potential abnormal, Will end up in charge of the Sanctuary.
Dimensional Transcendence (Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Knives/Ramona) Navigating Subspace is a lot harder than it looks.
Sweet, sparkly, and adorable fic where Ramona teaches Knives to navigate subspace.
To hear sleigh bells in the snow (Sports Night) It begins with Dan buying a parrot five days before Christmas. He brings it in in a cage. It’s gray, with a band of red feathers streaking its belly, a sharp curved beak, and small watchful eyes.
“That’s a parrot,” Dana says. “We are now a parrot-friendly workplace. We are inclusive of the parrot.”
Awesome and funny holiday fic, with spot-on Sports Night dialogue.
It's a wonderful life (Stephanie Plum - Janet Evanovich, Morelli/Stephanie) Stephanie Plum just wants a quiet Christmas. What she gets, in inimitable Plum fashion, is something else entirely.
I almost never read first-person fic, even when the source is written that way, because ... IDK, it seems like it's nearly impossible to recreate the exact internal monologue of a character, and it bugs me when it doesn't ring exactly true. But this is amazing, with pitch perfect Stephanie voice I could have sworn was ripped right from canon. Add some perfect Plum family hijinks and a dash of Morelli/Stephanie, and I love this fic absolutely to pieces.
Did You Mean 'Will Travel' (Traveler) Will Traveler. That's the sort of name that you type into a search engine and get nothing for your trouble. Jay's done it, of course, tapped "Will Traveler" into Google and come up with incredibly unhelpful results.
I've been waiting for good Traveler genfic ever since I watched the series, and this is exactly that - Jay, Tyler, and Will, post-series, navigating their new lives and awkwardly rekindled friendship. Also, the dialogue is hilarious.
Guest Star (Doctor Who/Merlin RPF, Karen/Katie) It’s not exactly a chance meeting. Katie will admit that she’s a fan.
Karen Gillan and Katie McGrath! Making out! Hot and sweet and adorable.
