Fandom opinions, part 2
Answers to the fandom opinions meme. Includes spoilers for Battlestar Galactica and Legend of the Seeker.
mfirefly10 asked:
What was your opinion of BSG season 4.5? What did you like/dislike about it? What would you have changed? And finally, did your opinion of 4.5 and the conclusion to the storyline(s) effect your opinion of the series as a whole?
I didn't hate it. At times, I loved it. But there were things I had huge problems with, as well. Dee's death. A bunch of white men coming out of the finale unscathed while everybody else ... didn't. The fact that, by the end of the series, every major female character had died at least once, including those who were alive in the finale. Adama's angsty manpain, including any scene involving paint, toothpaste, and/or vomit. The relegation of Roslin's character arc to the background in favour of focusing on her relationship with Adama. (Ditto Helo/Athena.) Everything about Boomer's storyline ever. Tyrol and the epic fail of him 'righteously' strangling Tory while everybody else looked on.
I didn't love the finale, but I didn't hate it. There are a lot of potential endings I can imagine liking more, but mostly, I would have liked some ambiguity in the ending instead of a half hour 'this is exactly how it happened' epilogue.
Things I loved: MY OTP GOT A HAPPY ENDING! HELO/ATHENA ♥ ♥. Gaius/Caprica. Being able to imagine Sam and Kara as kick-ass, snarky, lots-of-sex-having angels. Some of the action scenes were really cool.
Things I would have changed: Boomer's arc. All I wanted for her was some kind of redemption - or, failing that, some kind of legitimisation. An agenda of her own. Finding a self-actualised identity that she was comfortable and happy with. Not having my favourite character kill my second favourite character would have been nice.
Um, at least she got screen time?
Unfortunately, yes: the conclusion of the series, and of individual storylines, did affect my opinion of the show as a whole. I still think season one was damn near perfect, Boomer's early storyline was incredibly compelling, and I will never not love Helo and Athena on Caprica. But the, um, less than satisfying explanation for all the mythology ~stuff~ makes me cringe a little when it appears on rewatch, even early on in the series, and, well. I've always thought that endings are important, that they - to some extent - define a story, and I'm not a huge fan of the story as defined by BSG's ending. I mean, I still love the show - I've probably been more involved in BSG fandom than in any other - but I don't think it's as *good* as I used to.

a) Battle to the death of all the Disney stars, and you can only save one. Who? CHOOSE YOUR FAVOURITE WISELY, THERE ARE CORRECT ANSWERS.
b) Which is the gay one, Demi or Selena?
c) If you could see any not-already-existing DC RPF AU, what would it be and why?
d) Tell me two thotz you have on Legend of the Seeker, since I'm watching it. :D?
a) WHY WOULD YOU ASK ME THIS, ARE YOU EVIL? DO YOU KILL KITTENS?
But, okay, I would probably have to say Selena Gomez, which - is maybe obvious? She's pretty much the common thread in my Adventures In Disney Fandom, and I love her and think she's adorable. BUT. I would also be really, really sad if Demi Lovato or Vanessa Hudgens had to die, because they are super adorable also. THIS IS A HORRIBLE QUESTION.
Although, if David Henrie had to battle Joe Jonas TO THE DEATH, that would probably be pretty hilarious.
b) Oh, man, that is - harder to answer than I used to think? But if I have to decide, I would probably say Demi. Usually, I like to think they are both the gay one.
c) OH MY GOD, THIS IS HARD. There are so many awesome possibilities: an Alias-like fusion where they're spies! Fairy tale AUs! Apocafic! Fic where they're all superheroes! Futuristic science fiction!
If I'm allowed to cheat, I'd say THE ONE WHERE DEMI IS A KNIGHT AND SELENA IS A PRINCESS, because that means I would have written it already. Or the one where Demi is an alien and she and Selena fall in love, even though that's not ~strictly~ a Disney RPF AU.
But, okay, I love apocafic, so I would probably go with that. Like, I'm not quite sure what scenario, but it doesn't matter; any kind of apocafic (preferably of the cracky variety) is pure awesome. Or fairy tale AUs, because I really love those. Or fusions. YEAH, OKAY, I'M RIDICULOUSLY INDECISIVE, WHATEVER.
d) Two thoughts on Legend of the Seeker. ONE: I love Cara. I love her the most of anyone. Cara >>>>>>> Kahlan, even though Kahlan is straight-up awesome. I also really love Denna, and I wish she would come back. And Mord Sith Cordelia, so she and Cara can make out some more and then try to kill each other. TWO: I am glad that Darken Rahl is still around, even if he's dead. Mostly because I love Craig Parker (and, okay, EVERYBODY SHOULD WATCH DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY, THIS QUIRKY NEW ZEALAND SITCOM HE IS IN, IT IS HILARIOUS), and partly because I find him ridiculous and somehow endearing, even though he kills kittens, which I would otherwise say is unforgivable. BUT THIS ONE TIME, HE MADE KISSY FACES IN FRONT OF HIS MINION WHILE TRYING TO SEDUCE HIS BROTHER ON, LIKE, THE MAGICAL WESTLANDS EQUIVALENT OF THE INTERNET BY PRETENDING TO BE A HOT CHICK. So, I basically want more of that.
grammarwoman asked:
First-time vs. established relationship stories:
Do you have a preference or tendency to write one over the other? Do you have a preference or tendency (or just notice a trend) to read one over the other? Or do your answers vary by fandom?
I like first time stories. Actually, I love first time stories. They're definitely the majority of what I write, pairing-wise, and they're what I love to read. I even prefer first time stories for established couples, even if it means I'm confined to a particular canon timeline, or alternate timeline, or pre-series timeline. I love the tension between characters, I love storylines where one character gets to pursue the other, I love the excitement of getting together with someone you really like for the first time.
As far as I've noticed, my preference is pretty consistent across fandoms - even where, as I've noted, my favourite pairing is already canon, or becomes canon.
That said, I do like established relationships also - I love it when they're sweet and comfortable; when they're still exciting and nerve-wracking; when they're in the background of an awesome, plotty fic; when they're ridiculously fluffy or fun and porny. This is slightly more fandom-specific; there are definitely pairings for which I'm more likely to read or write established relationship fic. (I also have a tendency, sometimes, to continue first time fics to the point where they become established relationship fics, like with What Goes Down and Down Again.)
I also love the dynamic between exes, stories about people getting back together, secret relationships, and fics that never move beyond UST. So while I definitely have a preference, I'm open to reading and writing just about anything.
