Fannish 5

I am not procrastinating, I am taking breaks. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

A couple of recent topics from [community profile] fannish5 (with some spoilers for the relevant fandoms):

Five (canon) couples that seemingly came out of nowhere

+ Pete/Ashley (Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place). This was the first one I thought of, and one of my favourites. The first time I watched the series, I got up to ... about the beginning of season three? So I had no idea how it ended. And then when I started a recent-ish rewatch, I unded up on the wiki page and was spoiled for Ashley's pregnancy in the finale, but didn't get up to reading who the father was. So of course, knowing only that Berg/Ashley was canon and remembering that I'd loved it - and when Berg says, in her first episode, "Ashley is the most devious, conniving, double crossing woman I've ever met. We must have children together." - well, I assumed it was Berg. So when I started having shippy feelings about Pete/Ashley (pretty early on, actually - the wedding episode?), I fought them. And then, by the Halloween episode in season three, I gave up denying it ;) But I still never, ever expected it to be canon, so when they started dropping hints in season four, I ignored it - and then not only did they hook up, but Pete had some pretty serious feelings for her (and Ashley, arguably, had them back), and then she got pregnant - well, I'm pretty sure I still need to write post-canon fic where Pete tracks her down and they get back together ♥. (Actually, if there is any Pete/Ashley fic, anywhere, please link me?)

+ Jeremy/Bonnie (The Vampire Diaries). I'm terminally behind on this show, so I was prepared for it, but I still remember the sudden influx of people shipping Jeremy/Bonnie on my flist, all asking, wait, what the hell just happened, when did Jeremy Gilbert get hot, and why do I ship them? And - yep, that's pretty much what happened to me, when I got up to it. I really love that it snuck up on Bonnie just like it snuck up on us - and Jeremy pursuing her, that was pretty awesome. (And an honourable mention here should go to Tyler/Caroline, which may have had a slightly more overt progression, but still went from zero to OTP in about a minute flat. I really need to get caught up on this show.)

+ Ryan/Taylor (The O.C.). Another one that blindsided the characters (first Taylor, and then Ryan) at the same time as it blindsided the audience. And also my favourite - definitely out of this list, possibly ever. I love everything about this ship, from the way it was totally unexpected to the way it just (inexplicably) worked and how it made Ryan, and the show, fun and happy and amazing. Which I don't think anybody could have predicted, especially not with the way season three ended.

+ Logan/Veronica (Veronica Mars). It seems obvious looking back, but the first time though the series, that kiss (which is still awesome, whether or not I ship them any more) came almost completely out of nowhere. I wish I still shipped them, if only for that kiss.

+ Spike/Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Fairly literally - remember when Spike was fighting Buffy and then he kissed her and then he woke up and was in love with her? That was pretty awesome, actually - I don't really ship them any more, but I remember watching that episode, and going, um, what? closely followed by wait, yes. Like others on this list, the actual relationship didn't come out of nowhere, but the feelings sure as hell seemed to. And for a while, it was awesome.

Who are your five favourite female characters of colour?

This was a super hard one! There are so many women who I love, but these five are some of my favourite characters ever, and all are my absolute favourite characters in their respective fandoms.

+ Sharon "Athena" Agathon and Sharon "Boomer" Valerii (Battlestar Galactica). This may be cheating a bit, but a) they're both my favourites ♥, and b) they started off, at least, as the same person, so I'm counting it. It still pains me that they ended up on such opposite sides - and especially with what happened in the finale - but I still love them both, uncertain loyalties and changing sides and a certain amount of treachery included. I only wish Boomer's story had ended better :(

+ Alex Russo (Wizards of Waverly Place). Evil genius. Irresponsible wizard. Mediocre student. Slightly inappropriate sister. 100% awesome.

+ Andromeda (Andromeda). Warship, AI, avatar, android. Love every single version of her. I still haven't finished the whole series - I'm currently stalled on season three (again!) on rewatch - but I'm determined to watch the rest of it this time.

+ Ashleigh Howard (Greek). Ashleigh! I feel like she's my fictional soulmate; she was my favourite from the very beginning, and I was ecstatic when she became ZBZ president and started getting actual storylines of her own. Still not as many as I would have liked, but I'll take what I can get. If I could be BFFs with any fictional character ever, it would be Ashleigh - if only so I could share her wardrobe ;)

+ Kelly Kapoor (The Office). KELLY! ♥ Who loves Beyonce, pink the colour, Pink the person, hot dogs, basically anything that is awesome. And Ryan, for reasons that I'm sure are clear to her. For a long time, Kelly (and Ryan/Kelly) was pretty much the only reason I kept watching - I know everybody else is freaking out about Michael leaving the show at the end of the season, but I only really care that Kelly is (might be?) leaving. I'm still not sure I want to watch The Office without Kelly, even if it's only for her background appearances and occasional throwaway lines.

Honourable mentions: Teyla Emmagan (Stargate Atlantis), Max Guevera (Dark Angel), Rebecca Logan (Greek), Bonnie Bennett (The Vampire Diaries), Emily Fields (Pretty Little Liars), Dani Reese (Life), so many others.
