Yuletide recs
I didn't participate in
yuletide this year, but I did manage to scroll through the archive and read some of the stories posted. These were some of my favourites (22 stories in 17 fandoms).
Arrested Development
Dos Hermanos Estupidos. Gob and Michael go on a road trip to Mexico. Funny, and a fantastic Gob voice.
Of Ninjas And Peppermint Ice Cream. Maeby calls Gob and Michael to pick her up from school after her parents forget, and hilarity ensues. Nails the show's humour - there are some laugh out loud moments - while providing some genuinely touching moments between Michael and Maeby, and without sugar-coating the characters.
Babysitter's Club
Abby's Hanukkah Tales! Two tales, to be specific, both about the BSC girls growing up and finding love. And everyone's gay. More importantly, it has Stacey/Charlotte, which apparently is something I never knew I always wanted.
Chuck
That Merry Still Goes Round. Captain Awesome and Chuck - a very awesome, very sweet fic that clearly conveys Devon's very real affection for Chuck.
Empire Records
One Two Many. Berko and Gina on the road with their band. Vibrantly gritty, and endearingly ambiguous, with a great unspoken friendship between the two.
Friday Night Lights
Permutations. Various pairings, and the question of what real love is - and what the characters think it is. Poignant, with some nice insights into the characters and their relationships.
Gossip Girl
The Kind Of Christmas That Doesn't End In "Party". Serena and Blair, and Christmas traditions. Funny and sweet; Serena and Blair's affection for one another shines through brilliantly, with a healthy dose of femmeslashy subtext on top.
Imagine Me & You
Hyacinths Mean "You're Still A Wanker, Number Nine". Sweet, sexy, domestic fic, written in second person from Luce's POV. I love second person fics, when done well, and this one definitely is.
Hydrangeas. Heck and Rachel struggle to rebuild their friendship. Bittersweet, but ultimately hopeful, and you can feel the awkwardness and pain and desire that lies at the heart of the fic and their relationship.
Like A Cheesy Pop Song. Luce, Rachel, and falling in love. Sweet and charming fic that explores Luce and Rachel's relationship after the end of the film.
Things Found. Short, sweet fic about Luce and Rachel. About finding things that are nearly lost, and about choice and coincidence.
Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum series)
The War At Home. With Ranger dead and Morelli in Washington, D.C., Stephanie is unwittingly left in charge of RangeMan - and is given the daunting task of "cleaning up" Stark Street. Long, plotty fic that stays true to the feel of the books. Stephanie's voice is spot on, and the characters remain true to those we know and love.
One Tree Hill
if you shake your heart enough she will appear. A look at Brooke not far into the future as she muses on her relationship with Peyton, and the importance of being able to call your best friend just to say nothing at all. Sweet and a little lonely, with Brooke/Peyton subtext.
The Princess Bride
There Will Be No Survivors (Except The Survivors Behind The Curtain, But Pay No Attention To Them). Westley tries to teach Inigo to be the next Dread Pirate Roberts, which turns more difficult than he anticipated. A dryly funny coda to the film.
Real Person Fic
Disassociation (Firefly). Beautiful and swirly, fragments of awareness and memory blended together in a perfect mix of sweetness and pathos just on the edge of tragedy. Gut-wrenching, ambiguous, and some fantastic writing.
Not The Ocean (Battlestar Galactica). Callum Keith Rennie/Katee Sackhoff, with some sharp characterisation and simple, vividly painted scenes.
Whatever Happens, We've Got Us (Stargate SG-1). Ben Browder, Claudia Black ... and Harvey. Not quite a Farscape crossover, but awesomely cracktastic as Ben and Claudia continue to be heartbreaking in a manner not dissimilar to John and Aeryn.
Royal Tenenbaums
Second Grace. Richie, Margot, and what it's like to be secretly in love with your (adopted) sister. The characters are perfect, and manages to capture the dark, bittersweet comedy of the film.
Scrubs
My Destiny's Anvils. Cox and the Janitor read an entry from JD's diary. Funny and femmeslashy (which are my two favourite things about
yuletide this year), with some excellent non sequiturs you can almost hear JD narrating.
My Secret Magi. The Sacred Heart Secret Santa Exchange goes about as well as you could imagine. Funny and bizarre, like its source.
She's The Man
Seven Layer Confusion Cake. Confusion, curiosity, and totally tangled webs. Olivia/Viola post-movie, funny and involving and just plain awesome.
Wonderfalls
Jesus Complex. Case files and transcripts from Jaye's stay at a psychiatric institution. Wonderful outsider perspective on Jaye as her doctor goes from professional scepticism to a grudging sort of belief.
