Remixy Things

There's been a lot of discussion lately in fandom about the ethics of drawing inspiration from other people's fanfics to write your own. [livejournal.com profile] bottle_of_shine posted about the temptation of meta-ficcing, and suggested fanauthors use a Creative Commons licence. [livejournal.com profile] owlmoose equated remixes with "original" fanfic, and expressed a desire for remixing/meta-ficcing to become part of accepted fandom culture. [livejournal.com profile] angiepen called hypocrisy on authors who don't want their works remixed. [livejournal.com profile] vulgarweed asserts that meta-ficcing is not the same as plagiarism, and that appropriating others' texts is an established tradition among not just literary, but artistic, circles.

So. I totally agree with all the above points. I looked into putting a Creative Commons license on my fic journal, but ultimately, those licenses are for use on materials to which you possess the rights, which doesn't include fanfic; I love the gesture, but I don't think a legal license is the most appropriate way for me to express it. I did, however, want a way to express my "okay" on remixing and meta-ficcing my work, so I decided to create a community:

Remixy Things is a community for authors to post permission for their fics to be reworked/remixed/meta-ficced, etc., to seek out other authors who allow it, and to post any resulting fics, if they like. If you read/write fanfic, or if you just want to help me out, please join/pimp/what have you because I want to steal your fics, dammit.
