Dec. 11th, 2006 02:19 amI felt really bad about it, but for my birthday I got some jewellery that wasn't really to my taste and asked to return it. I was told to go ahead, so a few days later, armed with the original receipt, I went into the store and asked about a refund.
... which is where it got a little tricky. On the receipt I had, it said that they do not refund or exchange after 14 days for change of mind - which I felt implied that they do refund for change of mind within 14 days. Their website mentioned exchanges for online orders, but not refunds. A sign in the store (which I didn't notice until my second visit, or this might have been a shorter story) cheerfully proclaimed that they will gladly exchange or refund within 14 days from date of purchase, etc.
I was told by the woman I spoke to that it is not their policy to refund for change of mind (even though, being a gift, it wasn't strictly a change of mind). I - somewhat grudgingly - agreed to accept a credit note, but was then told to come back the next day to have it sorted out. I'm still not quite sure why, but okay.
The next day, I went in again. Said that I had come in the day before to ask about a refund, and was told to come back. The (I assume) manager asked why I had been told to come back later, I told him I didn't know. He gave me a refund.
A few hours later, surprised, pleased, and a little baffled, I reached a conclusion about my dealings with the jewellery store. Both times I went in, it was to the same store, to return the same items, and I told the cashiers the same thing. The only difference I could make out? That the second time, I spoke to a man, and was wearing a low-cut dress.
My breasts rock.
(Oh, and just to make their returns policy even more confusing: on my refund receipt, in bold, was the clause "no refund for change of mind.")
