holiday love meme 2013
my thread here

Also: Ask me my top 5 [whatever] of 2013 (on tumblr or here, whatever). Because I'm procrastinating and it seems fun!

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] slowmercury, I hope you had a great day :D

My own birthday extended birthday weekend ended up being pretty awesome; we went on a winery tour and to the zoo and I ended up getting a fancy coffee maker after all that makes super delicious lattes, plus I brought home way too much wine and cider with me, so it's all good.
amathela: ([comics] carol + flying = otp)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] summerstorm and [livejournal.com profile] gigglemonster!

Basically everything Marvel's doing right now is making me very, very excited. First they announced the new Ms Marvel title, in which the titular character is Kamala Khan, a Muslim teenager inspired by Captain Marvel to become a superhero. I love everything about that sentence. Carol Corps! More teenage girl superheroes who are heroes because they want to be, thank you very much. (Just keep Captain America away from her.)

And then they announced they'll be making four Netflix series focusing on Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Danny Rand, and Matt Murdock, followed by a Defenders miniseries. LUKE CAGE. JESSICA JONES!!!! <3 <3 A Jessica Jones series is basically my dream, pretty much second only to She Hulk: Single Female Lawyer. Which, can we make that happen now, please? I mean, if you really want David E. Kelley to make superhero shows, it makes a hell of a lot more sense than Wonder Woman.

Plus there are a bunch of new ongoing series I'm really looking forward to - She-Hulk! Black Widow! New Captain Marvel! FOUR FOR YOU, MARVEL. YOU GO, MARVEL.

In related news, I wrote a thing for [livejournal.com profile] rarecharacters:

Hero For Hire (2586 words) by amathela
Fandom: Marvel 616, Avengers (Comics)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Relationships: Luke Cage/Jessica Jones
Characters: Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Carol Danvers
Summary: Jessica Jones: Avenger. Or, not quite. Jessica does the superhero thing, more or less. Also featuring Luke Cage, Stay-At-Home-Dad.

Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] areasontofight and [livejournal.com profile] soobunny (and to [livejournal.com profile] care_says, [livejournal.com profile] rogueslayer452, and [personal profile] metaphasia, whose birthdays I missed last week).

Okay, I definitely signed up for too many holiday exchanges, but I'm coping. [livejournal.com profile] rarecharacters fics should be up any day now (they had some last-minute pinch hits, which I totally understand, since I'm pretty sure my writer and recipient both defaulted, but oh well. I really like the fic I wrote, anyway). Also, I've already started on my [livejournal.com profile] festivids assignment, which should hopefully come along without too many problems, so yay!

Now I just need to finish the million and one fics I've committed to, and I'll be all good ;)

ETA: RARECHARACTERS FICS ARE UP AND SOMEBODY WROTE ME AVALON HIGH FIC, THIS IS NOT A DRILL IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED, SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME WATCHED THAT MOVIE AND WROTE A FIC AND THEN GAVE IT TO ME, THIS IS FULL OF AMAZING. It's twelve days of tmi by mystery author, who if I am not already friends with I SHOULD BE BECAUSE AVALON HIGH!!! <3 <3
amathela: ([comics] cass cain)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] snickfic, [livejournal.com profile] corleones, and [livejournal.com profile] henpecked!

So I ended up signing up for [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa, which - I haven't done in about five years? But I've been doing a Stargate semi-rewatch lately, so it's got me nostalgic. I'm also doing [livejournal.com profile] femslashex and [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, so that's manageable; [livejournal.com profile] rarecharacters fics aren't in for another few weeks but I've already made a decent start on mine, so yay.

Also, I guess Gotham is going to be a thing? Which basically means I'm going to spend the next few months rolling my eyes at idiots on tumblr enthusing about YAY GOTHAM CENTRAL RENEE MONTOYA OMG, because Gotham Central this is not. Unfortunately. And I'm really not sure the world needs another variation on Batman: Year One (this time with less Batman), plus it means ever actually getting a Gotham Central series is possibly even less likely than ever, but whatever. (Ed Brubaker would like people to stop congratulating him, though.)

ETA: So livejournal won't let me post this with a link to the original article on Deadline, what the actual fuck is up with that.
amathela: ([lux] shining shimmering splendid)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] frolicndetour, [livejournal.com profile] lizardbeth_j, and [livejournal.com profile] mammothluv! I hope you all had a fantastic day.

Something something yuletide something femslashex something possible comics exchange. And space_exchange, but that's not until next year, unfortunately. So many things! I think I'm already pretty set on what I'm going to request for yuletide, but I'm still waffling over my fourth request. (Spoiler alert: Avalon High is set to become my new Miss Match. WATCH ME REQUEST IT FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS AND GET NOTHING.)

Come talk to me about the things you're excited about!
amathela: ([comics] i'm batgirl)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] notalwaysweak and [livejournal.com profile] earnmysong!

Also, [livejournal.com profile] not_primetime reveals are up. I wrote:

No One Takes Your Freedom (1906 words) by amathela
Fandom: DCU - Comicverse, Teen Titans (Comics), Titans (Comics)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Characters: Koriand'r, Donna Troy
Summary: Donna and Kory bust up an intergalactic slave trading ring. (With a little help from the rest of the Titans. Arguably.)

The fic written for me was In Perfect Light aka. STEPHANIE BROWN AS A BLUE LANTERN aka. possibly the exchange fic most perfectly tailored to my exact tastes I've ever received. STEPHANIE BROWN. BLUE LANTERN.

<3
amathela: ([comics] batman/wonder woman)
... and in the running tally of Stupid Stuff Done By Comics Publishers, DC pulls back into the lead. (Was there ever any doubt?)

Marvel launches Mighty Avengers, which, unlike the previous title of that name (which I was so excited about, because CAROL!!! and etc. but turned out to be mostly terrible) looks like it could be really great, Greg Land notwithstanding. LUKE CAGE <3 <3 <3 (Though this does torpedo my burning desire for a Jessica Jones, Superhero title featuring Luke Cage, Stay-At-Home Dad, but lets be real, that only ever existed in my head in any universe.)

Meanwhile, DC is totally keeping all its promises and maintaining the integrity of its core values no wait, the other thing. Like, we know we said you'd get 22 pages of story for $2.99 with no numbering gimmicks, but we actually meant that'd happen sometimes when we felt like it and definitely not in September, when you can get (probably) 20 pages of story for $3.99 and point one numbering but, um, shiny covers?

(I am still totally getting the Rogues issue and Forever Evil tie-in, though, because I love me some Rogues and I DON'T KNOW HOW TO QUIT YOU DC.)

Also, to no-one's surprise, the creator exodus from DC keeps on coming, with allegations of bullying from the editorial team. And some of the BEST AND MOST SUPER NECESSARY editorial comments, including the TOTALLY TRUFAX OBSERVATION that Batman doesn't sit down. Which means Batman Sits is obvs my favourite tumblr right now.

In other news, happy birthday to [personal profile] such_heights! I hope you have a super amazing day <3

Before I post an enormous capslocky comics rant of rage, happier things: Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] cashewdani and [livejournal.com profile] rotae, sorry this is so late! I hope you both had amazing days <3
amathela: ([bsg] katee)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] kindness_says and [livejournal.com profile] pirateygoodness!

True story: I sometimes forget that not everything is a phone. Pretty regularly, I'll be looking for something (most recently my earmuffs) and think, "I know, I'll just call it." And that seems like a really good idea until I remember that you can't actually call something if it's not a phone.

Basically what I'm saying is, why isn't everything a phone? I'M COLD AND I JUST WANT MY EARMUFFS OKAY.
amathela: ([comics] kate bishop)
So, catching up! Happy (somewhat belated) birthdays to [livejournal.com profile] pathstotread,[livejournal.com profile] stealstheashes,[livejournal.com profile] hondagirll, and [livejournal.com profile] wily_one24! I hope you all had excellent days.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen happened! I wrote two fics (my assignment and a pinch hit):

When Life Gives Me Lemons, I Make ... Something (3914 words) by amathela
Fandom: Wizards of Waverly Place
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Alex Russo/Justin Russo
Characters: Alex Russo, Justin Russo, Max Russo
Additional Tags: Humor, Hijinks & Shenanigans, Magic, Love Potion/Spell, Incest

A Dinosaur, A Giant Penny, And Two Hundred Chocolate Eggs (2306 words) by amathela
Fandom: DCU - Comicverse, Batman (Comics), Batgirl (Comics)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Stephanie Brown, Dick Grayson, Damian Wayne, Cassandra Cain
Additional Tags: Easter, Easter Egg Hunt, batfamily
Summary: The great Bat-Easter egg hunt.

And I managed to read some pretty amazing fics, too, so recs for a few of my favourites under the cut )

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] the_antichris!

So, that AO3 meme going around:

Sorted by hit count )

Sorted by kudos )

So. Avengers, am I right? And yuletide - I'm not surprised that seven out of my ten highest-kudos fics were yuletide fics, since I tend to hang out in small fandoms year-round, so obviously yuletide is going to provide a decent forum for that. (The only small fandom fic not written for yuletide on that list is Wizards of Waverly Place, which, also not surprising.) What was surprising was Team Building 101 - I had no idea it was that popular, but it makes me super happy. Also No Heroics, since Doom is a downright nonexistent fandom outside of yuletide.

On the other hand, I think the list sorted by hit count is probably more representative of my general body of work (it's a lot of Wizards of Waverly Place and Disney RPF, which, yeah). And there are a few fics that show up on both lists, though I think the second list is more heavily populated by fics I posted directly to AO3 when I wrote them, rather than crossposting long after the fact (which is the case with most of my fics); I don't know if that makes much of a difference, but it seems like maybe a little? And if I had to make a top ten list of my own favourite fics, it's probably look a bit like a hybrid of both lists, with a few other/older fics thrown in, so I guess that's not bad.

One last interesting thing: If you sort by comment threads instead, most of the same fics still pop up, but The Déjà Fait Fate Destabilizer (The Middleman, Ensemble) gets in at number six, so I guess Middleman fans just really like talking about it? Small fandoms represent!
amathela: ([comics] batman/wonder woman)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] mfirefly10! I hope you had an amazing day.

In more comics news, ugh. Rick Remender is an asshole, which shouldn't surprise me, because comics, but does disappoint me, because I enjoy a lot of his work (particularly his run of Uncanny X-Force, which I've fallen completely in love with). Whatever. Comics.

Also, I'm on a major Once Upon a Time binge right now, and have finally reached season two. (Okay, fine, I'm just watching so I can be caught up and actually see Aurora and Mulan, who I already ship like burning. Whatever. Tumblr.)
amathela: ([wowp] justin/alex)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] torigates! I hope you have a fantastic day :D

So apparently Manu Bennett was promoted to series regular for season two of Arrow? Which, apart from being exciting news in itself, MAYBE MEANS MORE CHANCE OF SEEING ROSE EVENTUALLY?????????? I LIVE IN HOPE.

And a meme that's been floating around:

How many (and which) ships have you shipped from the time you started watching a show until the show ended and you still continue to ship? Two rules:

1. Must be a show you watched at least part of as it was airing on tv (because catching up on a show in three weeks is different from watching it live over a span of years).
Or have been watching it for a good amount of time, whatever, I can't necessarily remember what shows I actually saw live and what I didn't after a few years, THIS MEME IS NOT THE BOSS OF ME.

2. The show has to be over with (i.e. no current airing shows count because you don't know which ships crash and burn or get together in the last few episodes and that might affect your shipping).

This was ... actually fewer than I expected? But still a lot, because I watch a lot of television.

Justin/Alex (Wizards of Waverly Place), Helo/Athena (Battlestar Galactica), John/Teyla (Stargate Atlantis), John/Aeryn (Farscape), Ted/Veronica (Better Off Ted), Michael/Lindsay (Arrested Development), Richard/Kahlan/Cara (Legend of the Seeker), Buffy/Faith (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Lamb/Veronica (Veronica Mars), Peter/Claire (Heroes), Clark/Lois (Smallville), Nathan/Haley (One Tree Hill), Beck/Jade (Victorious), Sasha/Payson (Make It or Break It), Ryan/Kelly (The Office) ... probably others I'm forgetting, whatever.

Some of those I still care about more than others; others, obviously, weren't right from the beginning of the show, but I think "from the time the characters were introduced" counts. And Ryan/Kelly only very nearly qualifies, but whatever, the show is almost over and they're only going to be on one more episode, I very much doubt whatever happens then will make me stop shipping it when several seasons of barely there-ness and the characters generally being kind of terrible people didn't. (And sadly I couldn't include Ryan/Taylor, because I only started shipping them in season four like everybody else with a soul, but I still ship them a lot, so they're there in spirit.)

XOXO

More birthdays! Happy actual, belated, or upcoming birthday to [personal profile] fan_eunice, [livejournal.com profile] malicat, and [livejournal.com profile] irishmizzy!

Also, reading the solicitation for last month's Hawkeye (yes, I was reading old solicitations, so what?), I'm now convinced that Hawkeye is the Marvel universe's Gossip Girl:
Valentine’s Day with THE heartthrob of the Marvel Universe?
This will be… confusing.
Xoxo, Hawkeye

Somebody write me that fic? (And yes, that's the solicitation in full. Hawkeye has some of my favourite solicitations.)

Speaking of Gossip Girl: YAY DAN IS WINNING HIS BRACKET. OBVS, THOUGH. So is Scott, which I'm super happy about, even though I voted for Jade (I HAD TO SHE'S MY FAVE, I CAN STAN FOR SCOTT NEXT ROUND.) And Artemis is losing, sad forever. Those are kind of the only races I care about though? OH WELL GOING TO LOOK FOR MORE DAN HUMPHREY GIFS. (I DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY DAN ICONS HOW OH RIGHT BECAUSE I HATE HIM BUT I DO HAVE MY FOREVER FAVOURITE RUFUS ICON.)
amathela: ([wolf] and his stupid face)
SO SCOTT MIGHT BEAT STILES IN THE FMM PRELIMS? I MIGHT ACTUALLY CHANGE MY VOTE FROM LYDIA FOR THAT, NGL. HIS FACE <3

(I have to laugh, though, because FMM is never even a little bit representative of fandom's actual tastes, like, Jo is currently winning the Supernatural bracket, and I mean, she is my actual favourite, but no.)

SERIOUSLY PLEASE VOTE FOR DAN HUMPHREY THOUGH, SPOILER )

ALSO WINSTON IS LOSING THE NEW GIRL POLL YOU'RE ALL FIRED. IDGAF ABOUT NICK MILLER AND HIS STUPID TURTLE FACE, OKAY, THERE I SAID IT.

JAMES VAN DER BEEK AS JAMES VAN DER BEEK 2013.

ALSO HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] empressearwig, IN HONOUR OF THIS OCCASION I WILL GIVE YOU ONE OF MY FMM VOTES AS LONG AS IT'S IN A CATEGORY I DIDN'T VOTE FOR AND/OR DON'T CARE ABOUT. Don't say I never gave you no bling.
amathela: ([bsg] hardcore superstar)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] myr_soleil! I hope you're having an amazing day <3

So I ended up changing my [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen sign up after all to add Wizards of Waverly Place, SO GLAD THEY ALLOWED SIX REQUESTS THIS TIME IDEK WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE IF I'D HAD TO CHOOSE. I'm looking forward to assignments going out, too, I just want to write ALL THE THINGS.
amathela: ([film] push)
Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] crackers4jenn, [livejournal.com profile] surreallis, and [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis! I hope you all have an amazing day <3

Also, I thinking about changing my rarewomen requests again? I KNOW, OKAY. Partly because nobody is offering Miss Match, which, duh, MY POOR TINY FANDOM OF ONE, and also partly because I could ask for Wizards of Waverly Place and/or Victorious? IT'S SO HARD MAKING DECISIONS.

UGH IT'S SO HOT HERE AND I HAVE TO WORK AND KIDS ARE BEING TERRIBLE THIS YEAR AND I WAS IN A CAR CRASH ON THE WEEKEND (I'M OKAY THOUGH) AND MY HOUSE IS A MESS AND I HAVEN'T WRITTEN ANYTHING IN FOREVER, CAN I GET A DO OVER ON THE PAST TWO WEEKS PLEASE.
amathela: ([p&r] april)
There's still a week left to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen if that's something that appeals to you (which it should, because it's amazing). Also, they're allowing up to six requests this year, which means I had to edit my signup to add more requests. Obviously. I also updated my letter to reflect that; I'm now asking for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Big Time Rush, Miss Match, and Avalon High, so excited!

I FINALLY FINISHED READING JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR NORRELL, FEELING PRETTY GOOD ABOUT MYSELF RIGHT NOW, NGL. I'm also now up to date on a bunch of ongoing comics titles (most of which just started, whatevs), none of which are DC, I'm really just not interested enough in any of the New 52 to bother (besides which, they inevitably end up cancelling most of the titles I'm even remotely up to date on, so).

Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] annakovsky! I hope you had a fantastic day <3

amathela: ([comics] ms marvel)
Comics Are Awesome, Comics Are Awful, Part #316:

- Batgirl: Year One is coming back into print! Robin: Year One and Batgirl: Year One are being collected together and rereleased in June, which is excellent, because the only copies I can find of the latter right now would set me back way upwards of $50, which is not happening. Waiting until June, however, is totally doable. Now if only DC would (re)release any of the other dozens of titles I'm missing, that would be super.

- The solicitation for Hawkeye #11 is giving me the warm and fuzzies. Aw, Pizza Dog <3

- ... and then there's the new Injustice: Gods Among Us prequel comic (discussion of torture and abuse), which has so many shades of Do Not Want I don't even know where to start. Not only will I not be checking out that comic after all, I won't be touching the game with a ten foot pole.

On a happier note! Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] dudski, I hope you had an amazing day <3 I'M SORRY YOU GOT LUMPED IN WITH COMICS, YOU ARE MUCH LESS TERRIBLE THAN THEY ARE.

Birthdays!
