So. Discovering Farscape, which is awesome. Not sure it was the best thing to watch after BSG, which is pretty much incomparable, but it's fun, and probably the most traditional sci fi-ish show I've seen (as opposed to a drama/comedy/western set in space). The good? John/Aeryn. Being randomly Australian. Fun!

The bad? Oh my god, the accents. If I though Matala's accent in Back And Back And Back To The Future was the worst I'd ever heard - which is surprising, given how many shows I've seen lately featuring Australian actors with flawless accents (mostly to the point of me not even realising they're Australian) - I take it back. Hers might have been more annoying, but Tiriel Mora's in Durka Returns is just plain wrong; if there's one thing guaranteed to make me cringe at a fake American accent, it's putting 'r's where none belong (Jeremy does it :p), and he's done it at least twice - and I'm not even halfway through the episode. Oh, Martin di Stasio, I used to love you so. But seriously, why does every Australian with a fake accent on that show draw out their words so damn much? Space isn't Texas, people, and that's the closest thing I can assume they're going for. And more to the point, why the hell does every second guest star have to put on a fake accent, anyway? If they can't do it - and most of them can't - please, for the love of my sanity, just let them speak naturally. Not only will it stop me spending half my time laughing at the screen/covering my ears, but apparently, it's really hard to act decently when you're putting all your effort into speech alone. Um. I could go on about this a lot, because it really bugs me, but pretty much: Directors - let your actors speak naturally, please. And actors? You're actors, dammit - do some freaking speech therapy.

Otherwise, though, I love the show. Really. And, dude, Claudia Black. <3

When first returning home after inadvertently being stranded on another galaxy, I think we've all learned two important lessons:

re: SGA's 'Home' and Farscape's 'A Human Reaction' )

Also, as annoying as having a fic Jossed can be, the opposite also holds true. It's always interesting when, instead of being contradicted by canon, a fic (or fic idea) can be so specifically supported by it that it renders the fic essentially useless. Like when, in season three of SGA, everything I was trying to do with As I Say was pretty much summed up in one line by John: "But then I would be the man, and who would I rage against?" On one hand, it's gratifying to know that my take on the character was spot on; that, two years before he comes to that revelation, I got it, and I got him. But on the other ... had I seen that episode at the time, I may never have written the fic, because what would be the point? Or like when I planned to write a Gilmore Girls fic where Luke helps Lorelai pick out the jeep when she first buys it - and then I watched It's Just Like Riding A Bike, where he does exactly that, only eight years later. My Luke-and-Lorelai picking out a car fic became totally canon, and I was left with nothing to write. So. Interesting, and definitely satisfying to know that you've got a great handle on the show/character, but a drawback to writing in open canons that isn't often explored.
