More thinky thoughts about fanfiction:

Unlike original fic, fanfic very rarely starts at the beginning. Even pre-series or spoiler-free fics assume something from canon, even if it's just information about the world, or the characters' names. And even fics accessible to people who aren't familiar with the source material - if they're any good - will mean more to people who are.

Most fanfic, though, contains a lot of assumptions from canon, which I think can be broken down into three categories: explicit (actual events, characterisation, etc. presented in absolute terms - eg. Buffy Summers is a vampire slayer, Rory Gilmore is intelligent, Seth Cohen likes comic books); implicit (things which may logically be inferred from canon, or which may be mentioned outright but still open to some interpretation - eg. Giles is a father figure to Buffy); and inferred (or rather, subtext; things we may read into canon, whether intended by the creators or not - most support for non-canon ships falls into this category).

What about you?

From [livejournal.com profile] 12_12_12 (and, well, everyone else, really):

I think we should all do this about whatever our fannish bliss is at the moment. Lets make it so that today it is impossible to turn around on LJ without running into a list of joy about some show or another. Who's with me? C'mon, I challenge you. A list of ten things that you love about your current fandom(s) posted to LJ and a challenge to all of your f'list to do the same.

It's not exactly my "current" fannish bliss - that changes monthly weekly daily hourly - but it's a fannish bliss, and it's what I feel like talking about right now, so here are my "ten things" about The O.C.

Ten things I love about you )

I've been thinking about real person fic a lot lately.

And here's what I've got )
amathela: (gg: gilmores)
I totally have not been putting off my [livejournal.com profile] heroes_bigboom fic. Not at all. And it in no way slipped my mind that first drafts are due in less than three weeks. I'm completely on top of it.

(I really should be working on it, though.)

But, first I have to write my Gilmore Girls WIP, which is so much fun. I'd completely forgotten how much I enjoyed working on a long fic; What Goes Down was my first series, and most of my fics are fairly short - I think around half of what I've written is under 1000 words. But I so love getting pulled into a world of my own, with its plot and relationships and everything else that comes with it. So, I suppose that's good, because once I've finished this, it shouldn't be too hard to really get into my Heroes fic. And I tend to write pretty quickly, so getting it done in time won't be a problem, provided I do actually sit down to write it.

Also, I created a new fanfic community:

[livejournal.com profile] fic_episodes

The basic premise is that you claim a set number of episodes within a fandom - a season, the entire series, episodes with a certain character, a plot arc, or anything else you like. And then you write one fic for each episode, somehow relating to that episode; missing scenes, prequels/sequels, alternate versions, picking up on something mentioned within the show and running with it, etc. I'm quite looking forward to it; I think it'll be fun, and like pretty much every other community I start, I created because I wanted to do it, which is probably a good start. And if it's fun for other people, too, so much the better :)

There's been a lot of discussion lately in fandom about the ethics of drawing inspiration from other people's fanfics to write your own. [livejournal.com profile] bottle_of_shine posted about the temptation of meta-ficcing, and suggested fanauthors use a Creative Commons licence. [livejournal.com profile] owlmoose equated remixes with "original" fanfic, and expressed a desire for remixing/meta-ficcing to become part of accepted fandom culture. [livejournal.com profile] angiepen called hypocrisy on authors who don't want their works remixed. [livejournal.com profile] vulgarweed asserts that meta-ficcing is not the same as plagiarism, and that appropriating others' texts is an established tradition among not just literary, but artistic, circles.

So. I totally agree with all the above points. I looked into putting a Creative Commons license on my fic journal, but ultimately, those licenses are for use on materials to which you possess the rights, which doesn't include fanfic; I love the gesture, but I don't think a legal license is the most appropriate way for me to express it. I did, however, want a way to express my "okay" on remixing and meta-ficcing my work, so I decided to create a community:

[livejournal.com profile] remixy_things

Remixy Things is a community for authors to post permission for their fics to be reworked/remixed/meta-ficced, etc., to seek out other authors who allow it, and to post any resulting fics, if they like. If you read/write fanfic, or if you just want to help me out, please join/pimp/what have you because I want to steal your fics, dammit.

More random musings. Just thinking about the shows/fandoms I love, and things they have in common, and I came up with a very random list:

We're the same, you and me )

Coming soon: A very bizarre definition of what makes my OTPs.

According to [livejournal.com profile] rainbowdarling, [livejournal.com profile] talumin and I are her Hufflepuff OTP. I think this is very very awesome; I've never been someone's OTP before. I want fanfic and shipping wars, dammit!

EDIT: ...um, edited :P

Earlier today, I came across an entry by [livejournal.com profile] misscam (here) via [livejournal.com profile] metafandom about why - not who - people ship. It's not, I'm sure, a new topic of discussion, but it did get me thinking - about what I ship, and more curiously, about what I don't.

Cut for seriously tl;dr fandom meta )

Sigh. I'm not sure if this makes me more Gray than I thought, or less.

In defense of all possible meanings of the term "derivative work."

Cut for long, fandom ramblings )

Granted, it was almost a month ago now. But I meant to write about it then, and now, I've actually got around to it.

Summary of the weekend )

The verdict? Two very enthusiastic thumbs up. If things go according to the current plan - that is, if I get a decent job sometime in the next few months - I'll still be in Canberra next year, so I'll be able to go again.

I can't wait already.
